SANJYRA AND JETI ATA:

THE GENEALOGY OF IDENTITY

Aibek Samakov Adviser to the National Commission of the Kyrgyz Republic for UNESCO, Cultural Heritage and Humanities Unit, University of Central Asia Among the most deeply rooted traditions in Kyrgyz culture is the practice of sanjyra, the oral transmission of genealogical knowledge that allows individuals to trace their ancestry through generations. While sanjyra is a comprehensive account of the genealogical tree of the clan, tribe or the Kyrgyz people as a whole, each individual is expected to know at least seven generations of ancestors locally known as jeti ata, lit. “seven forefathers.” [13] This ancient practice is not merely a matter of record-keeping; it is a living expression of identity, memory, and social ethics that continues to shape interpersonal relationships, community organization, and cultural belonging among the Kyrgyz people today [14]. For centuries, the knowledge of one’s jeti ata has served as a vital component of Кыргыз элинин генеологиясы” кол жазмасы, Кыргыз Республикасынын Улуттук Илимдер Академиясы | Manuscript “Genealogy of the Kyrgyz People”, National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic эмес, кайраттуулук, чыдамкайлык, берил- гендик жана салтты сыйлоо мектеби да болуп калды. Today, it offers not just a spectacle but a means of transmitting values: courage, endurance, loyalty, and respect for tradition. As Kök-Börü continues to grow in popularity, it faces new challenges. These include balancing ethical concerns regarding animal welfare with traditional practices, navigating commercialization and other inequalities. Yet the essence of Kök-Börü lies in its adaptability. It is a tradition that has transformed across centuries while retaining its core. It is rooteded in the land and in the collective imagination of a people who have long defined themselves through motion, strength, and shared stories. Kök-Börü remains a powerful emblem of Turkic nomadic heritage, alive not in museums or archives, but in galloping hooves, clenched riders, and communal celebrations that echo across the steppes. It is a living heritage resilient, rhythmic, and resonant connecting past and present through the thundering pulse of horses and the enduring heartbeat of culture. Manuscript “People’s genealogy diagram” (Nasab-nama), National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic Kyrgyz social life. In many societies, lineage is referenced in general terms such as grandfather, great-grandfather, whereas the Kyrgyz tradition retains specific names and relationships for each generational tier, both up and down the line. For example, 1. Father is ata 2. Grandfather is chong ata 3. Great grandfather is baba 4. Forefather in 4th generation is buba 5. Forefather in 5th generation kubar 6. Forefather in 6th generation joto 7. Forefather in 7th generation jete As for the descendants, a son is bala, a grandchild is nebere, great grandshild is chöbörö, offspring in 4th generation is kybyra, in 5th is tybyra, in 6th is chürpö and in 7th is urpak. This fine-grained genealogical mapping connects individuals to a larger web of ancestors and descendants, rooting them within an expansive and continuously unfolding family tree. The act of remembering and reciting this lineage is not just a demonstration of memory, it is a statement of who one is, where one comes from, and how one relates to others in society [15]. The sanjyra is traditionally passed down orally, often by elders and renowned individuals known as sanjyrachy who commit to memory long genealogical chains stretching across centuries. Famous sanjyrachy’s who recited the genealogy of the entire Kyrgyz people include Balyk, Togolok Moldo, Belek Soltonoev, etc. [16] This oral transmission reflects the high value placed on memory, storytelling, and intergenerational communication in Kyrgyz society. Although there have been attempts to document sanjyra in written form, its vitality lies in the spoken word, in gatherings where family histories are shared and remembered together. One of the most practical social functions of jeti ata is to regulate marriage practices. According to Kyrgyz custom, individuals who share a common ancestor within the past seven generations are prohibited from marrying one another. This rule, based on the knowledge of jeti ata, serves both as a means of preventing consanguineous marriages and as a moral principle that Бул аракет жөн гана ысымдарды жаттоо эмес, адам- дын үй-бүлө, тарых жана жер менен байла- нышын бекемдеп, алака-катыш бутактарын жайылтуу үчүн керек. of one’s descendants all the way down to the seven generations. While the practice of sanjyra is ancient, it remains highly relevant in contemporary Kyrgyz life. In recent years, there has been a notable revival of interest in genealogy among younger generations, spurred in part by cultural revitalization efforts, digitization projects, and a growing desire to reclaim indigenous knowledge systems. Youth are increasingly turning to elders to learn their jeti ata, to map their family trees, and to reconnect with the deeper layers of their identity. This process is not only about remembering names, it is about reestablishing the threads of belonging that connect individuals to families, to histories, and to the land. Moreover, the sanjyra serves as a powerful tool in community ceremonies, such as weddings, funerals, and memorial events. Manuscript “People’s genealogy diagram” (Nasab-nama), National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic In this way, genealogical knowledge is not only a matter of personal identity but a mechanism of social cohesion and collective ethics. More broadly, the sanjyra provides a structure for community building. Through shared lineage, people can identify distant relatives, recognize mutual ancestry, and reaffirm bonds that extend beyond immediate family units. This has historically been particularly important in nomadic contexts, where mobility across vast territories was common, and where knowledge of extended kinship ties facilitated cooperation, hospitality, and mutual aid among traveling groups. Even today, this extended sense of kinship continues to underpin relationships in both rural and urban Kyrgyz settings, helping people navigate social networks, political affiliations, and communal responsibilities [17]. The sanjyra is also a repository of collective memory. Within the genealogical lines are embedded stories of migration, tribal alliances, historical events, and legendary ancestors. Some lineages trace back to the founding figures of the Kyrgyz people, including mythical progenitors and great warriors, as well as historical leaders whose deeds are remembered through oral poetry and epic narratives. These ancestral stories do more than glorify the past, they provide moral guidance, cultural orientation, and a sense of pride that is grounded in continuity with generations before. The linguistic richness of the sanjyra tradition is another noteworthy feature. Distinct terms exist not only for ancestors but for each tier of descendants, reflecting a nuanced understanding of generational distance. This vocabulary embeds generational thinking into everyday life, reinforcing an awareness of time that stretches backward and forward, linking each person to a long line of predecessors and successors. Such linguistic precision affirms the Kyrgyz worldview in which the individual is always situated within a broader, ongoing lineage. It symbolizes that every Kyrgyz person has a responsibility for safeguarding what the forefathers have left behind and keeping in mind the well-being
