SACRED SITES: CARE, RESPECT
AND APPRECIATION OF LAND
Aibek Samakov Adviser to the National Commission of the Kyrgyz Republic for UNESCO, Cultural Heritage and Humanities Unit, University of Central Asia The Kyrgyz people have nurtured an ancient tradition of pilgrimage to sacred sites, a practice deeply embedded in Kyrgyz cosmology and way of life. This enduring relationship between people and land is marked by reverence, care, and an understanding of nature as sacred. For centuries long before the establishment of formal protected areas Kyrgyz communities have preserved specific natural features such as mountains, springs, groves, trees, stones, and caves through cultural practices and spiritual devotion. Today, more than 1,000 sacred sites have been documented across Kyrgyzstan, forming a vast network of living cultural landscapes where rituals, «Сулайман-Тоо» ыйык тоосу, Ош шаары - Sacred Mountain “Sulaiman-Too”, Osh city Санжыра ар кандай аземдерде – үй- лөнүү үлпөттөрүндө, сөөк коюуда, аш берүүдө да маанилүү роль ойнойт. During these gatherings, it is common to recount genealogies, not only to identify who is related to whom, but to honor ancestors, acknowledge lineages, and affirm the social order. These rituals bring genealogy to life, making it a participatory and communal act rather than a static record. In doing so, they underscore the Kyrgyz understanding of identity as something lived, shared, and continuously renewed. Importantly, sanjyra is not only a personal or familial heritage, it is a cultural heritage that belongs to the Kyrgyz people as a whole. It exemplifies a way of knowing that integrates history, ethics, and relationality. It teaches respect for elders, accountability to future generations, and humility in recognizing one’s place within a long continuum. These teachings are deeply relevant today, offering counterpoints to the often fragmented and individualistic forms of identity prevalent in modern society. The vitality of the sanjyra tradition lies in its adaptability and its deep roots. Even as Kyrgyz society evolves through urbanization, migration, and globalization, the practice of tracing and honoring lineage remains a stronghold of cultural identity. It connects people not only to the past, but to each other in the present, and to a future in which identity is remembered, not reinvented. Through sanjyra and the observance of jeti ata, Kyrgyz people continue to practice a living heritage that affirms who they are and where they belong not as isolated individuals, but as members of an enduring and intergenerational community. In this way, the sanjyra is far more than a genealogical tool, it is a worldview, a value system, and a cultural compass. It teaches that one’s identity is not constructed in isolation, but inherited through generations of lives lived in relation to one another and to the land. This living tradition continues to guide the Kyrgyz people, anchoring them in a sense of time, place, and responsibility, and ensuring that the names of those who came before are never forgotten. Бул жайларга адамдар жашоодогу маа- нилүү учурларын белгилөө үчүн, кеселдер оорудан арылуу үчүн, бала таппай жүргөн- дөр перзент тилеп сыйынуу, ата-бабалар- important events, and each site holds its own unique story passed down through generations. These stories are carried not just in words but in practice through visits, ceremonies, and the responsibilities of sacred site guardians who guide pilgrims and tend to the sites. Such guardians may be healers, elders, or spiritual guides, and their knowledge is crucial for maintaining the rituals and meanings attached to each site. The tradition of pilgrimage, therefore, is also a form of learning, an embodied pedagogy through which younger generations absorb ethical principles, oral histories, and ecological knowledge. Many sacred sites are located in areas of rich biodiversity. Because they are considered inviolable, they often function as community-conserved areas where extraction or disturbance is avoided out of spiritual respect. In some cases, rare medicinal plants, endemic tree species, or animal habitats have survived precisely because the area has been spiritually protected for centuries. The environmental significance of these sites is not accidental, it is intimately connected to the Kyrgyz worldview that sees land not as a resource to be exploited, but as a living being to be respected and honored. Several sacred sites in Kyrgyzstan have become emblematic of the Kyrgyz relationship with land and spirituality. Sulaiman-Too, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is perhaps the most iconic. Rising from the city of Osh in southern Kyrgyzstan, it is not only a geological marvel but also a repository of sacred energy, ancient places of worship, and healing caves. It has served as a pilgrimage destination for thousands of years and is associated with Islamic prophet Solomon. Ysyk-Köl Lake is considered to be one of the most sacred places in Kyrgyzstan. It lies within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is also surrounded by numerous sacred springs, groves, and stones [20]. Pilgrims come here to perform healing rituals, believing the lake to possess purifying powers. Similarly, Khan Tengri, one of the highest peaks in the Tien Shan range, is revered not only for its majesty but also for its spiritual aura. healing, and intergenerational knowledge transmission continue to take place. Known as mazar, yiyk jer, or kasiettu jer in the Kyrgyz language, these sacred places are not remnants of a bygone era but vibrant sites that continue to shape community life. Pilgrimage to these sites referred to as ziyarat (or mazar basuu, mazar taiuu) is a vital element of Kyrgyz intangible cultural heritage [18]. People visit sacred sites individually or in groups to perform rituals, offer prayers, and seek healing or guidance. Each journey carries profound spiritual meaning, connecting individuals with their ancestors, with unseen forces of the natural world (referred to as kaiyp), and with one another. Pilgrims often conduct sacrifice rituals (kurmandyk chaluu) light candles (sham jaguu), tie ribbons to sacred trees, or spend time in silent contemplation. These acts are not only expressions of belief, but reaffirmations of belonging, of care for the land, and of continuity with ancient ways of knowing [19]. The sacredness of these sites is ofte n associated with ancestors, holy people, and Each of these places illustrates how natural landmarks become woven into a spiritual geography that transcends physical space to embody ancestral wisdom and collective belonging. These sacred sites are not isolated monuments, but part of a wider spiritual geography that connects valleys, mountains, rivers, and ancestors into a web of meaning and guidance. They are places where people gather to mark important transitions in life, to pray for health and fertility, to grieve and to celebrate [21]. In a time of rapid social and environmental change, the practice of pilgrimage continues to offer stability, orientation, and a sense of rootedness. It is not only a return to the land, but a reaffirmation of values such as respect for elders, gratitude toward ancestors, and responsibility for the natural world. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, there has been a noticeable revival of interest in sacred site pilgrimage. Many Kyrgyz are returning to these practices as a source of spiritual nourishment and cultural pride. Research institutes, local knowledge holders, and researchers have joined efforts to document sacred sites and support community initiatives to maintain them. Yet the strength of this tradition lies not in formal protection, but in its everyday practice. Its quiet resilience and its continued relevance in people’s lives. Sacred site pilgrimage remains a living heritage, shaped by the footsteps of those who return year after year, guided by stories, dreams, and the enduring spirit of the land. This ancient tradition exemplifies a way of life that is deeply attentive to both the visible and invisible forces of the world [22]. It is a practice that weaves together memory, place, and presence, reminding us that cultural heritage is not only what is preserved in texts or museums, but what is carried in bodies, spoken aloud in prayer, and walked across the land. The sacred sites of Kyrgyzstan, and the pilgrimages that bring people to them, continue to serve as vital expressions of identity, spirituality, and ecological care, a heritage as enduring as the mountains themselves. images carved and etched into volcanic basalt stones, Saimaluu-Tash offers a remarkable window into the beliefs, lifeways, and creative expressions of ancient peoples who once moved through these mountains. These rock engravings, some dating back to the third millennium BCE, stand as one of the most vivid testaments to Kyrgyzstan’s deep cultural and spiritual history. For millennia, Saimaluu-Tash has served as a canvas for human imagination. Its petroglyphs depict a wide array of subjects: wild and domestic animals deer, bulls, goats, horses, dogs [24] alongside human figures in hunting scenes, ritual postures, dances, and acts of worship. There are geometric symbols, sun disks, solar deities, and animals. The diversity of imagery and the many layers of engraving suggest that this site was used by different cultures across a vast timespan from the Bronze Age and Scythian period through to the early Turkic era. Together, these markings form a living archive, capturing how ancient peoples related to the land, to the cosmos, and to one another [25]. Unlike cave paintings hidden deep underground, the rock art of Saimaluu-Tash sits under open sky, on a wide plateau visited seasonally by herders, hunters, and spiritual seekers. The very inaccessibility of the site, which is reachable only on foot or horseback after a strenuous mountain journey, has helped preserve its integrity. For many, the pilgrimage to Saimaluu-Tash is part of the experience. To arrive there, surrounded by the silent presence of mountains and stones carved with ancient signs, is to feel a deep sense of wonder and connection across time. Saimaluu-Tash is more than a gallery of prehistoric images. It is a sacred landscape that has long held spiritual meaning for the Kyrgyz people. Local oral traditions regard the site as a holy place, where the spirits of ancestors, nature, and celestial beings reside. According to legend, women would come here to pray for fertility, and traditional healers performed rituals to communicate with the unseen world known as kayip düinö [26]. Even today, visitors bring offerings such as milk, bread, or coins and tie prayer cloths to nearby bushes, much like at other sacred sites across Kyrgyzstan.
